238 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine C lifton Meador graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1952 and an MD in 1955. He completed his assistant residencies at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Vanderbilt Hospital. Dr. Meador served three years as captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1957 to 1959 in between his residencies. After completing his residency at Vanderbilt, Dr. Meador remained at the hospital for another year as an NIH fellow in endocrinology. For the next 11 years, Dr. Meador relocated to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he held multiple positions including assistant professor, associate professor, professor of medicine and dean of the School of Medicine. Dr. Meador remained loyal to teaching medicine, briefly serving as a professor of medicine at the University of South Alabama for two years. From 1982 to 1998, he was the medical director of St. Thomas Health in Nashville, but then returned to Vanderbilt University to be a clinical professor of medicine, attaining emeritus status in 2012. Dr. Meador was inducted into the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame in 2011, was the recipient of the National Achievement Award from Vanderbilt University Medical Alumni in 2010 and was named a Markle Scholar from 1962 to 1967. Of all his achievements, Dr. Meador is most proud of when he created the Medical Information System by Telephone (M.I.S.T.), a system in which any doctor in the state of Alabama could call into the hospital and consult with other doctors for advice in two minutes. The system accounted for about 100,000 calls in the first year, and it is still being used today. Dr. Meador has also contributed to the medical world through his writing. He has published 14 books, including “Little Book of Nurses’ Rules,” “Little Book of Doctors’ Rules,” and “Fascinomas: Fascinating Medical Mysteries and True Medical Detective Stories,” among others. He is a member of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, the Tennessee Medical Association, the Endocrine Society, the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
