242 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Jorge L. Ribas, is a medical professor and scientist, business executive and community activist, as well as a Vietnam-Era veteran who retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army. Dr. Ribas conducted neurochemistry research with Dr. Julius Axelrod, a Nobel Laureate, at the National Institute of Health. At Walter Reed’s Army Institute of Research, he researched drug addiction in Vietnam Veterans, HIV infection, AIDS and the Gulf War Syndrome, and specialized in brain tumors and infectious and parasitic diseases. Dr. Ribas has published more than 50 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, authored chapters in textbooks and presented his research results domestically and internationally. Notably, he helped launch the School of Medicine of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He was administrator of the Walter Reed Gulf War Health Center and director for Internet Technologies for the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command inWashington, D.C. Dr. Ribas served on numerousMaryland state and county commissions, and as president of local and countywide civic organizations. His accomplishments include organizing Silver Spring’s sesquicentennial, facilitating creation of the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce; gaining Congressional support for a new WRAIR building; petitioning Congress to continue the USUHS mission; and securing funds for projects including: Silver Spring’s $15-million revitalization; $43 million for a new Blair High School and $250 million for county infrastructure improvements. He served as a columnist for Maryland’s Montgomery Journal newspaper and produced and hosted two weekly radio programs in the D.C. area. Currently, he is a member of the Chesapeake Bay Citizens Advisory Group which reports to six governors on the health of the Bay and tributaries. Dr. Ribas earned three degrees: an AA, BS and DVM. He conducted postdoctoral studies in neuroendocrinology at the University of Rochester Medical School, a pathology residency at the University of Alabama Medical Center and training in the pathology of infectious diseases at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology andWRAIR.
