266 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine J ames C. Carpenter respected law-related professions from a young age, as his father was a lawyer. He viewed the practice as a platform to be more broadly engaged in the community, and he believed that lawyers had influence in the community at large. Mr. Carpenter is now certified to practice law in Ohio and focuses on the areas of complex business, commercial and banking litigation. He received his JD from The Ohio State University in 1974 and a BA from Ohio University in 1972. Since 2010, Mr. Carpenter has been a partner at Steptoe & Johnson PLLC. Prior, he was the managing partner of Carpenter Lane LLC from 2006 to 2010. Mr. Carpenter was a partner at Lane Alton & Horst for 10 years from 1996 to 2006 and Carlile, Patchen & Murphy for 14 years from 1982 to 1996. He began his career in law at Knepper, White, Arter & Hadden in Columbus, Ohio, as an associate from 1975 to 1980. Additionally, Mr. Carpenter was an administrative assistant for U.S. representative Robert Shamansky in Washington, D.C., in 1981. Over the course of his 40-plus year career, Mr. Carpenter has worked on successful large-scale cases that have garnered him much recognition. He has been named to Best Lawyers in America for nine years since 2011, and Lawyer of the Year for civil litigation in 2017, for professional malpractice defendants in 2019 and for product liability in 2019. He was also named to Super Lawyers from 2006 to 2010 and America’s Top 100 High Stakes Litigators, and became a charter fellow of the Construction Lawyers Society of America in 2017. In addition to his current roles, Mr. Carpenter is a member of the American Bar Association, the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and Phi Beta Kappa. He is a fellow of the Columbus Bar Association and the Ohio State Bar Association, where he has been a litigation section board member since 2015.
