Johanson served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1976 to 1980 before making a name for himself as a distinguished attorney and counselor at law. He received an AA in liberal arts from Columbia College in 1980 and a BA in individualized studies, summa cum laude, from the University of Minnesota in 1983. He subsequently obtained a JD, cum laude, from the University of Minnesota. Today, he is admitted to practice law in California, Maryland, Washington D.C., Minnesota, Texas and New York. Mr. Johanson is a senior partner with Hawkins Parnell & Young LLP and served for more than 10 years as a temporary judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Between 1997 and 2014, Mr. Johanson was an attorney with Jackson Lewis and Johanson Berenson LLP in Napa, California, and of counsel with Case Bigelow& Lombardi in Honolulu, Hawaii, from 1997 to 1998. At the inception of his career, Mr. Johanson was a law clerk and associate for Bowman & London in Saint Paul, Minnesota, from 1984 to 1987. He then served as a tax consultant for Ernst &Whinney in Minneapolis before taking on an associate role with Ober, Kaler, Grimes & Shriver. Heading to California, Mr. Johanson was a member at Ludwig & Jeans, an income partner at Keck, Mahin & Cate, and an equity partner at Graham & James LLP. Mr. Johanson also has been a panel chair of arbitration for the Beverly Hills and Santa Monica Bar Associations and worked pro bono for the Eastern District of California, Bar Association of San Francisco and the Napa Office of the Public Defender. Mr. Johanson has been recognized by The ESOP Association and Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Johanson is a member of the Rocky Mountain Employee Ownership Center and Southern California Mediation Association. He served for 10 years as general counsel and on the stock options advisory board for The National Center for Employee Ownership, and for almost 20 years, as a monthly columnist for The ESOP Association. He served twice as the chair of The ESOP Association’s Legislative and Regulatory Advisory Committee and on its Board of Directors. DAVID R.
