284 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine B eltsville, MDThe motivation for Abdullah Salim’s human and civil rights work comes from his family’s long history as community leaders. His father was the first African American to run for governor in North Carolina. Inspired by his father’s fight, Mr. Salim achieved a JD from the George Mason University Law School in 1981. He also received a BA in ancient history and linguistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970 and completed postgraduate work at Howard University and the University of Maryland. Mr. Salim specializes in immigration law and says seeing the joy on clients’ faces when they become citizens has been the highlight of his career. From 1983 to 2014, Mr. Salim operated out of his private practice, the Law Office of Abdullah Salim, JD, PC, and Abdullah Salim & Associates. Outside of his law career, Mr. Salim is a ship captain with the Historic Tours of America. He has also worked at Crawford & Company, E&S Consultant, D.C. Barwood Cabs, Associates IV Theaters, Aetna Life & Casualty Company, Pride Inc., the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and the Charlotte Observer. Mr. Salimhas taught at Hagerstown Community College and the District of Columbia Public Schools. A member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Mr. Salim has served as a civil rights coordinator since 2015, licensed master captain since 2011 and flotilla commander since 2009. In 2015 and 2016, he was the recipient of an Outstanding Leadership Award from the Auxiliary. Additionally, Mr. Salim was recognized for his courageous and visionary efforts to establish African and African American studies at UNC Chapel Hill in 2010 and was the recipient of the Immigration Law Award from Ayuda Neighborhood Services in 1981. Mr. Salim is a member of the American Association for Justice, American Bar Association, International Platform Association, Maryland Association for Justice, National Bar Association, American Society of International Law and Phi Delta Phi. He is also a member of the Alumni Associations of UNC Chapel Hill and George Mason University. Additionally, Mr. Salim is a trustee of the A.L. Richardson Scholarship Fund. ABDULLAH SALIM, JD, ESQ.
