66 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine G rowing up on a vegetable farm, James B. Howell III was encouraged by his parents to get an education to support his work. In 1956, Mr. Howell graduated with high honors from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, with a Bachelor of Science in vegetable crops agriculture. In 1957, Mr. Howell served with the U.S. Army and became a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. He later continued his studies and obtained a Master of Business Administration from the University of Delaware in 1980. Over the years, Mr. Howell has continued to explore the field of agriculture with this family’s Cedarville, New Jersey, asparagus farm. Mr. Howell spent 1957 to 1959 as an agricultural sales representative with the Allied Chemical Corporation in Philadelphia and later joined the team at Asgrow Seed Company, a subsidiary of the Upjohn Company, as a sales consultant from 1960 to 1999. With his 39-year career with the Asgrow Seed Company, Mr. Howell exponentially grew as an agricultural advocate and as a professional in the field. For his dedication to his field, Mr. Howell was the recipient of the Heritage Award from the New Jersey Agriculture and Business Association in 2003 and was awarded the Horticultural Award from Rutgers in 1955. For all of his successes and achievements, Mr. Howell credits his greatest mentor, Mr. Gilbert Sheppard. Currently, Mr. Howell is a trustee with the First Presbyterian Church of Cedarville and has previously sat on their official board. Mr. Howell has additionally been on the board of directors for Advance Wight Systems, Inc., chairman of the Lawrence Township Zoning Board Adjustment and an admissions liaison officer with the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Mr. Howell is a member of Alpha Zeta, Brothers of the Century, Phi Beta Kappa, the Reserve Officers Association, the Vegetable Growers Association of New Jersey and the Centennial Honor Roll with the National Defense Industrial Association. In his spare time, Mr. Howell enjoys hunting, fishing, farming and attending church. JAMES B.
