74 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Lamia Mustafa Al Naama loves teaching and the journey of the development of students. Hailing from a family of medical professionals, she attributes her father’s occupation as a dean of a medical college and cardiac physician as an influence on her career choices and opportunities. Dr. Al Naama graduated from the University of Baghdad’s College of Pharmacy in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy. In 1979, she obtained a PhD in medical biochemistry from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. After completing pharmacy school, Dr. Al Naama was a research assistant within the biochemistry department at Basrah Medical College in Iraq from 1971 to 1979. While in the United Kingdom, she was a research fellow of medical biochemistry at the University of Manchester from 1975 to 1979. She then returned to Iraq, where she worked as a lecturer of biochemistry until 1995 and professor until 2015. She held a position as head of the biochemistry department from 1982 to 2015. She has dedicated more than 30 years of her career to Basrah Medical College. Outside of her career within academia, Dr. Al. Naama is a gifted speaker. She has presented a number of presentations during medical conferences, both domestic and international, on topics such as “Serum Ceruloplasmin, Copper, Zinc Levels and Cu/Zn Ratio in Malignancy,” “Apo B Validity and DM” and “Oxidative Stress in Thalassemia.” Dr. Al Naama is a member of the Biochemical Society of the United Kingdom, the Iraqi Pharmaceutical Society, the Iraqi Chemist Society, the Iraqi Medical Laboratory Association and the American Association of Clinical Chemistry. Additionally, she was chair of the Advisory Committee of Clinical Laboratories at the Basrah Health Directorate from 1984 to 2010. Dr. Al Naama attributes her success to the love and support of her family. She believes without their support, she would not have had the opportunity to be in any of her positions. Dr. Al Naama’s philosophy is to simply continue to help others. In five years’ time, she hopes to publish papers and read more to broaden her knowledge in her ever-growing field.
