She was also a grantee of the National Science Foundation from 1970 to 1992 and again from 1997 to 2001, as well as the National Institutes of Health from 1967 to 2004. Dr. Beattie is associated with various organizations. Shewas on the advisory committee for medical school programs with the Association of American Medical Colleges from 2003 to 2006, where she was also on the cell biology test committee and served as chair. Dr. Beattie was also president of the Association of Medical and Graduate Departments of Biochemistry in 1996, among many other positions. The advice that Dr. Beattie can offer to the next generation of biochemists is to know what you are doing. She notes the importance of staying abreast of industry developments and networking with colleagues. She encourages women to not give up and to fight for their own career aspirations. A pioneer for women in the field of biochemistry, Dr. Diana Scott Beattie received a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh in 1961, a Master of Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 1958 and a Bachelor of Science from Swarthmore College in 1956. Science was a male-dominated field while Dr. Beattie was in school, but she always focused on working twice as hard as the men worked, and it led her to her becoming the dean of the premedical and pharmacy programs at Oman Medical College in Muscat, Oman, from 2006 to 2014. Apart from Dr. Beattie’s role at Oman Medical College, she was a professor and chair of the biochemistry and molecular pharmacology department at theWest Virginia University School of Medicine from 1985 to 2006. From 1976 to 1985, Dr. Beattie was a professor of biochemistry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Additionally, she was a research associate at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare Systems and the University of Pittsburgh.
