79 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine In 1982, Dr. Buford earned an EdD from Nova Southeastern University. After 25 years of excellence at Furman University, Dr. Buford retired in 2000. Between 1974 and 2000, she was a research association within the Office of Installation Planning and Research and an instructor of educational research. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Buford was a steering committee member of the Junior Great Books Program within the Greenville County School District from 1968 to 1972. She was also a teacher with the Fort Worth Independent School District from 1955 to 1958 and the Dallas Independent School District from 1954 to 1955. Some of Dr. Buford’s notable achievements include a scholarship being named in her honor by the Greenville branch of an educational foundation and receiving a 25-year pin at her retirement party. Additionally, she was the recipient of two Service Awards from the Mental Health Association and has been deacon and chairman of deacons of her local church. Dr. Buford has been a member of the American Association of University Women since 1969, where she sat on the board of directors of the Greenville branch, on the executive board of directors of the South Carolina branch, as president and as state secretary. Likewise, she is affiliated with PEO International, the North Carolina Association for Institutional Research and the South Carolina Association for Institutional Research, where she was president, president-elect and secretary. Additionally, she was chair of the contributed papers committee of the Southern Association for Institutional Research. Outside of her career, Dr. Buford is an avid adventurer, recalling her exciting experiences of flying in hot air balloons and skydiving. She expressed that she wants to experience everything there is in this life, as you cannot get time back. D r. Delores Phife Buford’s leadership roles began in high school with the debate team. She won all but one tournament of debate within her first year, which led her to college debate success. In 1954, Dr. Buford received a BA from the University of North Texas, and later obtained an MA from Furman University in 1974. DR.
