80 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine I ntrigued by the radio industry since his high school years, Richard A. Carvell received a BS in radio journalism from Arkansas State College in 1966 and obtained an MS in radio and television from the University of Illinois in 1972. Mr. Carvell was the news director for KASU in Jonesboro, Arkansas, in 1971 before moving up to operations manager one year later. In 1976, he was promoted to station manager, completing this role until 1988. Entering the world of sports journalism, Mr. Carvell was a writer, producer and director of broadcast production for Indian Sports Network from 1972 to 2000. In 1972, Mr. Carvell also began his first teaching job as an instructor of radio and television at Arkansas State University. He was an instructor until 1988 when he became an assistant professor and chairman of the Department of Radio and Television. Mr. Carvell retired from his positions in 2008 after amassing more than 30 years of excellence in academia. Mr. Carvell was a grantee of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in 1971, alongside numerous other agencies. In 1994, he was the recipient of the Dr. Daniel Pilkinton Award for Outstanding Service to Public School Education in Arkansas. He thanks his mentors Hi Mayo and Charles Rasberry for their mentorship and motivation over the years. Prior to starting his media career, Mr. Carvell served in the U.S. Air Force as a precision photographic services officer from 1967 to 1971. He was stationed at the Lackland, Lowry and Barksdale Air Force Bases and Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Vietnam. In Vietnam, he volunteered as a squadron civic action officer, and he and his team worked for one year with an orphanage. Mr. Carvell’s mother collected and sent more than 30 boxes of supplies for the orphans. Mr. Carvell is a member of Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Arkansas Boys State Commission, and formerly served on the Nettleton Arkansas School Board. He also was a member of the Broadcast Education Association, Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, Arkansas School Boards Association and the National School Public Relations Association.
