81 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Carmel J. Cohen received a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University in 1954 and an MD from the Tulane University School of Medicine in 1958. After his undergraduate years, Dr. Cohen became interested in the legal aspects of medicine and thought he would go on to practice medical jurisprudence. After spending time as a court reporter, Dr. Cohen served as a defense consultant. He never lost a case on his own and his record was very famous among the New York Bar. After 50 years in the medical field, Dr. Cohen was named professor emeritus of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 2016, where he served as a professor of obstetrics and gynecology for over 30 years. He has trained numerous fellows, many of whom have become pioneers in the discipline of gynecologic oncology. An attending obstetrician and gynecologist at the Mount Sinai Hospital, he previously served as vice chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at Mount Sinai, where he founded the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and was its chairman for more than 25 years. Notably, Dr. Cohen is the author of 150 peer-reviewed publications, 86 published abstracts, more than 100 invited publications, chapters and monographs, and is a noted worldwide speaker. Dr. Cohen is a past president of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and New York Obstetrical Society and fellow of the Society of Pelvic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. Likewise, he is a charter member of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society and sits on the board of directors of the Eastern Division American Cancer Society. The advice Dr. Cohen passes on to those aspiring to work in his field is to be confident in one’s skills. He says it is imperative to have compassion, extensive knowledge on the subject and experiences both personally and professionally. In light of his outstanding contributions to medicine, he was given the Jacobi Medallion from the Mount Sinai Medical Center, the National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education from CREOG, and the St. George Medal from the American Cancer Society, among myriad other accolades.
