82 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine The author of numerous works, the highlight of Mr. Colon-Navarro’s career was prior to his law career when he launched the Detroit summer program “Projecto Adelante” to remedy the high attrition rates. When he began working at Thurgood Marshall in 1991, he was met by a Hispanic student who was one of the children in the program. He said it was one of the most fulfilling events of his life. For his legal and academic excellence, Mr. Colon-Navarro was named Professor of the Year in 2001 by the Hispanic Law Student Association and an Outstanding Advisor in 2002 by Thurgood Marshall. Additionally, Mr. Colon-Navarro was thrice named Professor of the Year by the Chicano Law Student Association and was the recipient of their Achievement Award in 1995- 1996. Furthermore, he was named Outstanding Visiting and Evening Professor by the Student Bar Association at the Texas A&M University School of Law. F ernando Colon-Navarro received a BA from Saint John’s University in Minnesota in 1974 and a JD from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1981. In 1990, he obtained an MEd from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and in 1991, he received an LLM from Harvard Law School. Notably, Mr. Colon-Navarro is a co-founder of the Thurgood Marshall School of Law’s Institute for International and Immigration Law. Since 2005, Mr. Colon-Navarro has been a visiting professor at the Escuela de Derecho de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, and since 2012, a professor of law and director of the LLM and Immigration Development Program at Thurgood Marshall. Mr. Colon-Navarro began his career in 1979 as a law clerk and trial assistant for the Hennepin County Public Defender’s Office in Minneapolis. From 1981 to 1987, he was an attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Minnesota, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and Chicago Board of Education. Focusing on the education sector, Mr. Colon- Navarro became a director and clinical instructor at the Harvard Law School Immigration and Refugee Clinic. At Thurgood Marshall, he served as clinical director from 1992 to 1995 and an associate professor from 1991 to 2008.
