84 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine Citizen of the Year Award in 2015 and was given a Certificate of Merit for Service to the Community by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of the U.S.A. in 2008. Additionally, in April 1999, Dr. Derise was named AARP Citizen of the Month. Despite keeping busy as a professor, Dr. Derise makes sure to be an active member in her local community. From 1977 to 1978, she was chair of the Louisiana Board of Examiners in Dietetics and Nutrition. Additionally, Dr. Derise sits on the board for the Jeanerette Museum Board and is a frequent contributor of articles to professional journals. Dr. Derise is a member of the American Home Economics Association, the American Dietetic Association, the U.S. Metric Association, the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior, the Institute of Food Technologists and Sigma Xi. She sat on the board of directors of the Louisiana Home Economics Association from 1973 to 1975. S ince she was a young girl, Dr. Nellie Louise Derise was very curious and thought learning was exciting. She grew up in a rural area and attended a small country school that encouraged her study habits, and she eventually decided to study home economics and science. In 1962, she received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and in 1964, she obtained a Master of Science from the University of Alabama. In 1973, she achieved a PhD from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. With her goals set on being an educator, Dr. Derise’s first job was a graduate assistant at the University of Alabama from 1962 to 1964. Dr. Derise retired in 1994 after being a professor and associate professor of home economics at her alma mater, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, for more than 20 years. During her tenure, Dr. Derise was also an assistant professor at Iowa State University of Science and Technology. A beloved and respected educator and researcher, Dr. Derise has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for her service in education.
