Eckardt received a BA from Oberlin College in 1944 and later obtained an MA from Lehigh University in 1966, from whom she later received an honorary doctorate. On several occasions, she was a visiting scholar at the University of Oxford Center for Postgraduate Hebrew and Jewish Studies, as well as a senior associate fellow and Maxwell Fellow there. She first began studying history during the Holocaust in Germany, and upon reading about the arrests of Jewish men and destruction of synagogues and shops, Ms. Eckardt’s eyes were opened to the devastation. Thereon, she focused on the history of Jewish-Christian relations over the course of centuries, including changes in theology. Ms. Eckardt’s teaching career began in 1972 as a lecturer in the religion studies department at Lehigh University. In 1976, she moved up to assistant professor, and that same year, she co-founded and co-directed the Jewish Studies Program at Lehigh. In 1985, Ms. Eckardt was named a full professor, and in 1987, was named professor emerita. Alongside these posts, she was a board member of Muhlenberg College’s Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding from 1989 to 2017. Authoring more than 200 chapters and articles, as well as public lectures, Ms. Eckardt wrote three books: “Encounter with Israel,” Long Night’s Journey into Day: Life and Faith After the Holocaust” and an enlarged edition of that volume with the subtitle “A Revised Retrospective on the Holocaust.” She has been an editorial board member of several publications, including an associate editor of the Journal of Ecumenical Studies since 1991. Ms. Eckardt was the recipient of the Humanitarian Award from B’nai Brith in 1989, the Righteous Person Award from Temple Beth El in 1997 and the Eternal Flame Award from the Anne Frank Institute in 1987. She also received the Human Relations Award from the Jewish American Committee and the Myrtle Wreath Achievement Award from Hadassah in 1971, among other accolades. Ms. Eckardt was a member of the American Academy of Religion, American Professors for Peace in the Middle East and the Lehigh University Women’s Club, where she served as president. ALICE L.
