89 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. David William Furnas received a BA and an MD from the University of California Berkeley in 1952 and 1955, respectively. He subsequently earned an MS in toxicology and pharmacology from the University of California San Francisco in 1957. Thereafter, he served in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve as a captain for two years and as a colonel since 1989. Dr. Furnas is a leading practitioner, researcher and educator in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. He is notable for his work internationally in Kenya, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and India. He has dedicated his expertise to the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India, who named him Godrej Visiting Professor. Dr. Furnas has been a member of the University of California Irvine faculty, serving as clinical professor, chief of plastic surgery, professor and associate professor of plastic surgery for five decades until attaining emeritus status in 2002. Previously, he worked at the University of Iowa as an associate and assistant professor, senior resident and faculty associate. Additionally, he worked at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Scotland and Gorgas Hospital in Panama. Dr. Furnas has been the recipient of the Golden Apple Award, Kaiser Permanente Award and Humanitarian Service Award for Black Medical Students from UC Irvine. Additionally, Dr. Furnas won the Senior Research Award from the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation and was named Physician of the Year by the Orange County Medical Association in California. Hewas also granted a Certificate of Special Recognition fromtheU.S. Congress. The highlight of Dr. Furnas’ career was being presented an award from the American Association of Plastic Surgeons alongside Barbara Quale. Dr. Furnas received the award for being her surgeon and successfully repairing Ms. Quale’s burn injuries. Dr. Furnas is a member of the American Medical Association, California Medical Association and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, among others. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and honorary member of the European Society of Plastic Surgeons and British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
