92 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine R. Kent Greenawalt is an authority on constitutional law and legal philosophy and has been a prominent member of the Columbia University Law School since 1965. Mr. Greenawalt graduated with honors from Swarthmore College in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts, was a Keasbey Fellow at the University of Oxford, where he received a Bachelor of Philosophy in 1960, and was a Kent Scholar at Columbia University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Laws in 1963. After his graduation from Columbia, Mr. Greenawalt clerked for Supreme Court Justice JohnM. Harlan andwas an attorney for the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights in Jackson, Mississippi. He also spent one year as a special assistant for the Agency for International Development in Washington, D.C. Mr. Greenawalt’s tenure with Columbia University Law School began in 1965 as a faculty member, and in 1990, he was promoted to university professor. The highest faculty rank and academic honor, this allowed Mr. Greenawalt to cross departmental boundaries and teach in both the law school and department of philosophy. Additionally, Mr. Greenawalt served on the NewYork City Bar Association’s civil rights committee from 1966 to 1969, served as chief reporter for the Revision of Commentary of the Model Penal Code in the 1970s and was a deputy solicitor general for the Department of Justice in 1971. He has been a visiting professor at various universities, including Princeton University, NYU Law School, Marshall-Wythe School of Law, Northwestern School of Law and Stanford Law School. Mr. Greenawalt is amember of the American Philosophical Society and the American Law Institute, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Additionally, Mr. Greenawalt served as president of the American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy and was a fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies. He is the author of 18 books on jurisprudence as it relates to church and state, legal interpretation, discrimination and freedom of speech. On top of his career achievements, Mr. Greenawalt was the recipient of the Ivy Award from Swarthmore College in 1958. R.
