216 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine F ascinated by his doctor stitching up his wound when he was in fifth grade, Dr. Franklin Dewees Barnett felt a calling to medicine since that moment. Dr. Barnett loves his work as an obstetrician/gynecologist because it is a positive profession within the medical field, and he is proud tohave deliveredmore than 8,000 healthy babies andperformed thousands of surgical procedures. He values the friendships which were formed from his practice. Dr. Barnett received a BA fromAsbury University and went on to achieve his MD at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1961. Dr. Barnett finished his BA one year early and taught chemistry, algebra and general mathematics in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, before attending medical school. In 1962, Dr. Barnett completed an internship at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, and then spent the next two years enlisting as a captain and practicing as a medical officer with the U.S. Air Force. Upon completion of his military service, Dr. Barnett began his residency in obstetrics-gynecology at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center. He completed his residency in 1967. The attributes Dr. Barnett possesses that have contributed to him being a doctor is his desire to help and care for people. For over 30 years, Dr. Barnett worked at a private practice in Midwest City, Oklahoma, and retired in 2000, often serving as chief of obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Barnett says he practiced in the “golden age of healthcare” and cherished the opportunities he had with patients to not only watch their families grow, but also become friends. Additionally, Dr. Barnett has been a clinical associate professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Dr. Barnett is a past president of theMidwest City Rotary Club, where he has had 49 years of perfect attendance, and is a former member of the American Medical Association, American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He has served on the board of directors for the Oklahoma Blood Institute since 1980 and is an activemember of the YMCA and church.
