Clair Claiborne graduated from the University of Kansas with a BA in chemistry in 1973 and obtained his PhD in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University in 1984. Dr. Claiborne originally wanted to be a chemist, but after working for Sued Chemie A.G. as a chemotechnician in Moosburg, Germany, he made the switch to materials science. After returning to the United States, Dr. Claiborne worked as an engineer for Janes Manufacturing, Inc., in 1975. He then was a research assistant at Northwestern University from1976 to 1980, which prepared him for his role as a research chemist at Phillips Petroleumuntil 1984. Dr. Claiborne then became a senior scientist for Westinghouse Electric, now ABB Power T&D Company Inc., in Sharon, Pennsylvania, from1984 to 1991 and in Raleigh, North Carolina, from 1991 to 1997. From 1991 onward, Dr. Claiborne planted his roots in Raleigh. From 1997 to 2002, he was a fellow scientist at ABB, Inc., having subsequently served the company from 2000 to 2011 as a U.S. environmental specialist. From 2002 to 2017, he was a principal consulting R&D scientist. Since 2017, Dr. Claiborne has been the owner of Claiborne Consulting LLC. Dr. Claiborne isamemberof theAmericanChemical Society, the International Electrotechnical Commission and the International Council on Large Electric Systems. He is also a senior member of the Society of Plastics Engineers and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Additionally, Dr. Claiborne is the author of the books “WorkingwithMetals” and “WorkingwithNon-Metals,” and is a contributor of more than 75 articles to professional journals. For his contributions to polymer materials science and chemistry, Dr. Claiborne was named Material Scientist of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals in 2019. For his invention BIOTEMP, which he calls his greatest career highlight, he won the Regional Innovation Award from the American Chemical Society and was a co-recipient of the IR Award. BIOTEMP offers significant environmental, fire safety and operational advantages over mineral oil and other alternative insulating fluids. He was a chairman of ASTM International for six years and is now an honorarymember. C.
