154 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine S ince he was a child, Gregory Paul Hill had an innate curiosity regarding how things worked mechanically. The oil and gas industry boomed in his native Wyoming, and this also piqued his interest in the field. In 1983, he graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, with honors, and went on to hold executive positions at various leading oil and gas companies. Since 2009, Mr. Hill has been the president and chief operating officer of Hess Corp., formerly Amerada Hess, in Houston. Prior to this role, he served Shell E&P International as executive vice president of the Asia division from 2006 to 2008 and vice president of production in Europe between 2002 and 2005. He was also the vice president of planning executive strategy and external affairs in 1998. Earlier in his career from 1983 to 1992, Mr. Hill worked for Shell California Production, Inc., Shell Oil Co. and Shell Western E&P. Additionally, from 1997 to 2001, Mr. Hill worked at Aera Energy LLC in Bakersfield, California, as senior operating vice president, senior vice president of innovation and breakthrough performance, and vice president of operations. Mr. Hill is currently a board member for Harbour Energy, the National Ocean Industries Association, CEOs Against Cancer and the API Upstream Committee. He is also chairman of the University of Wyoming Foundation, the State of Wyoming ENDOW Initiative, and is co-chair of the Wyoming Governors Tier 1 Engineering Task Force. Mr. Hill calls former Vice President Dick Cheney his inspiration, who spoke at Mr. Hill’s community college while he was president and chief of staff. Mr. Hill was moved by his life story and saw much of himself in Mr. Cheney. Serving in such high roles at multi-billion dollar corporations, Mr. Hill has exceled in his endeavors because he made balancing a healthy work life with downtime a priority. He would pass this advice on to future engineers, as well as to be humble and unafraid to take on challenges.
