222 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A n applied animal behaviorist and psychologist for many years, Dr. Joan M. Engel retired in 1994 after working for Block Drug Company in Jersey City, New Jersey, as a biostatistician for drug trials and consumer advertising claims support. Certified by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, Dr. Engel launched a second career in the field of pet dog behavior consulting in 1999, serving as a statistical consultant for published studies and presentations at the ASPCA in New York and the Animal Rescue League in Boston. Since 1988, Dr. Engel has brought her knowledge in animal behavior to college classrooms. Most recently, she was adjunct faculty at North Central University in Prescott, Arizona, from 2005 to 2009. Dr. Engel also taught at Marist College, the College of New Rochelle, John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Lehman College. Additionally, she taught at the College of Mount St. Vincent and was an assistant research scientist in statistics at New York University Bellevue Hospital. Drawing upon her extensive research, Dr. Engel is the author of the “Manual for Foster Parent Training” in 1980 and the article “The Parent Therapist Program: A NewApproach to Foster Care of Difficult Adolescents,” published in the Journal of Children and Youth Services Review, in 1983. At the ARL-Boston, she published the article “Long-Term Outcome after Treatment of Feline Inappropriate Elimination” in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science in 2002. Dr. Engel is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the Animal Behavior Society, the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, and the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. Prior to spearheading her career, Dr. Engel received a BA from the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 1970, an MA from the New School for Social Research in 1977, and a PhD in lifespan developmental psychology from Fordham University in 1989. Furthermore, she was a psychotherapy trainee at the Archdiocese of New York Clinic and studied individual psychology at the Alfred Adler Institute. JOAN M.
