Ms. Froiland began her career at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics in 1979, where she was an assistant nurse manager, station instructor, charge nurse and staff nurse. For one year, she served as assistant nurse manager at the Methodist Hospital in Minneapolis, and from 1989 to 1991, she was a hospice nurse with the Mayo Clinic Foundation. Between 1991 and 2003, Ms. Froiland spent time as a senior nurse instructor, senior wound ostomy continence nurse and program director of the wound ostomy continence nurse education program at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. As an educator, Ms. Froiland wanted to share what she learned with other nurses, as well as learn from them to broaden her perspectives and knowledge of oncology and oncology nursing. Ms. Froiland is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society, where she served as the Houston chapter secretary, president-elect, president and on their board of directors. She was awarded their Mary Mazzaway Scholarship in 2000. Civically involved, she has been volunteering her time to the American Cancer Society in Houston since 1991. Additionally, Ms. Froiland is a member of the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Society. In 2001, she was named Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse (WOCN) of the Year by the South-Central Region of the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Society. Likewise, she was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Texas at Houston School of Nursing, the Excellence in Clinical Care Award from NurseWeek, the Excellence in Patient Care and Clinical Education Award and an MD Anderson Gynecologic Oncology Fellows Class of 2000 Award. A nurse of more than 40 years, Kathryn G. Froiland prides herself on being patient-focused. She received a BS in nursing from Saint Olaf College in 1979 and an MS in nursing from the University of Texas at Houston in 1994.
