225 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine C oming from a family of medics, Dr. Everett Hubbard Heath chose to combine the influence of his family and love for animals to pursue a veterinary career. Dr. Heath received a BA from Swarthmore College in 1957 and a Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris, which is only awarded by the University of Pennsylvania, in 1962. In 1964, he obtained an MS from Purdue University, and in 1969, he acquired a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. A certified veterinarian since 1962, Dr. Heath’s first role was as an instructor at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. In 1964, he went to lecture at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria for two years. From 1966 to 1974, Dr. Heath went from assistant to associate professor at the University of Minnesota, and then returned to the University of Ibadan, where he rose through the ranks from senior instructor to reader until 1978. Thereafter, Dr. Heath taught at the University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign from 1978 to 1986 as associate professor and professor of veterinary medicine. From 1987 to 1998, Dr. Heath worked as a veterinarian at Home Veterinarian Care while also serving as an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois. Of his numerous roles over the years, Dr. Heath most enjoyed doing house calls as a veterinarian. He also valued the time he spent in Nigeria; the experience opened his eyes to not only a foreign culture, but it helped him see that the reputation of the country was misguided, and people across the globe are alike in nature. Dr. Heath recounts that the Nigerian people are a lot like the American people. Dr. Heath is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Veterinary Anatomists, World Association of Veterinary Anatomists and the Piedmont Veterinary Medical Association, where he served as president from 1990 to 1991. He also serves on the board of directors for the Lynchburg Peace Education Center and is the author of the 1985 work, “Anatomy and Physiology of Tropical Livestock.” In his spare time, he is a tenor saxophonist in the two-man band, Two Guys Jazz.
