103 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine W ith nearly 40 years of experience, Faith LaVelle has been recognized as professor emeritus of the Loyola University Medical Center since 1987. Prior to her retirement, she acted as a professor from 1985 to 1987, associate professor from 1976 to 1985, and assistant professor from 1970 to 1976, as well as acting department chair from 1984 to 1986. From 1955 to 1970, she was a research associate with the University of Illinois College of Medicine, having been an instructor from 1952 to 1955. Her first role was an administrative assistant in zoology and instructor of anatomy with the University of Pennsylvania from 1948 to 1951. Dr. LaVelle first attended Mount Holyoke College with the intention of studying history or English. However, her science professors ignited in her a fascination with biology, and so she changed her trajectory. She obtained a BA, summa cum laude, in 1943. She continued her studies at Mount Holyoke and graduated in 1945 with an MA in zoology. She then enrolled at Johns Hopkins University and achieved a PhD in biology in 1949. A respected voice in her field of developmental neurocytology, Dr. LaVelle maintains affiliation with the American Association of Anatomists and the Society for Neuroscience. With Mount Holyoke College, she has been a trustee from 1960 to 1965, a trustee fellow beginning in 1988, and an honorary member beginning in 1988. She served as national president of the Camp Fire Girls in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. LaVelle was the recipient of the 1953 Golden Apple Teaching Award from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, the 1965 Alumnae Medal of Honor and the 2008 Achievement Award from Mount Holyoke College, and the 1979 Wohelo Order Award from the Camp Fire Girls. She has been presented with seven Preclinical Teaching Awards from the students at Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago. Dr. LaVelle married the late Arthur LaVelle in 1947 and had one child, Audrey, and one grandchild. In her free time, she still volunteers as a fundraiser for Mount Holyoke and a presenter of programs on neuroscience and the aging brain for fellow residents at her retirement community.
