116 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A t 8 years old, Dr. Virginia “Ginny” Overdorf was not permitted to play on her town’s Little League, while all of her male playmates were. After her pleading with the new president of the Little League failed, her mother started a softball team for girls. Dr. Overdorf has fought passionately for equality ever since. Dr. Overdorf holds a BA in physical education and psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University, an MS in physical education and motor learning from Indiana University, and an MA in psychology fromMontclair State University. She attended Columbia University Teachers College, where she received an MEd in motor learning and control and biomechanics and an EdD. Between 1964 and 1967, Dr. Overdorf was an instructor and women’s basketball and field hockey coach at SUNY Binghamton and Eastern Connecticut State College. She served as a professor of kinesiology at William Paterson University from 1967 until her retirement in 2012. She was chair of movement sciences, special assistant to the dean of the College of Science and Health, and chair and vice chair of the faculty senate. Earlier, she was head coach of the women’s field hockey team and tennis team, which she developed into a nationally ranked team. She was named Division III National Coach of Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association. Dr. Overdorf was an editor for the New Jersey State Journal, The Reporter, and the Women in Sports and Activities Journal, had a chapter in the book “Eating Disorders Among Female Athletes,” has given more than 100 talks and presentations, and contributed over 40 journal publications. She was awarded a presidential citation, Honor Award and Outstanding Teacher Award from the New Jersey Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Dr. Overdorf became involved in her profession because of her belief in the importance of movement. She is a former president of the Eastern District Association and the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education. She also was active in the American College of Sports Medicine and the Network of Women Leaders, and a charter member of the board of directors of the American Kinesiology Association. DR.
