Dr. Silver was a W.M. Keck Foundation Professor for Resource Geology at the California Institute of Technology from 1955 until his retirement in 1996, in which he was named professor emeritus. He also served as senior geologist from1969 to 1974 and junior geologist from1948 to 1955 at the U.S. Geological Survey. The highlight of Dr. Silver’s career was his work with NASA. During the 1970s, Dr. Silver was involved in the lunar surface geology experiment team, lunar sample preliminary examination team, lunar surface traverse planning team, lunar science working panel and lunar sample analysis planning team for Apollo missions 13, 15 and 17. Dr. Silver became the lead geologist for the Apollo 15 experiment that launched in 1971.
