295 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine J ames Kevin Toohey, Esq., received a BBA from the University of Notre Dame in 1966 and a JD from Northwestern University in 1969. He is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, Society of Trial Lawyers, Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine and Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. After a nearly 40-year long career, Mr. Toohey retired as a partner from Johnson & Bell, Ltd. in 2019. He was previously a partner at McGuire Woods LLP and Ross & Hardies, and an associate at Ross, Hardies, O’Keefe, Babcock & Parsons and Taylor, Miller, Magner, Sprowl & Hutchings. Mr. Toohey was also an assistant at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago from 1971 to 1974. Mr. Toohey calls his greatest career achievement to be representing Volkswagen, Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz USA over four decades in product liability matters in Illinois with no losses. This included summary judgment for Audi after 25 years of litigation of national class action, alleging unintended acceleration of Audi 5000. He is also proud of representing a burn victim in a case against Ford. He won the client a $250 million dollar lawsuit without settling. LAWYER Johnson & Bell, Ltd. Chicago, IL JAMES KEVIN TOOHEY, ESQ. A fter taking an aptitude test in middle school that said he would make a great lawyer, Judge John W. Pope set his sights on law. In 1969, he received a BA, and in 1973, he obtained a JD, both from the University of New Mexico. He is now a distinguished judge retiree of the 13th judicial district court, where he worked for 21 years. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Pope was a judge for the State of New Mexico from 1987 to 1992 and the director of litigation for the City of Albuquerque from 1985 to 1987. He has been a partner or associate at Pope, Apodaca & Conroy; Cowper, Bailey & Pope; and Chavez & Cowper. In 1973, Mr. Pope served as a law clerk for the New Mexico Court of Appeals. Mr. Pope was the recipient of three Outstanding Judicial Service Awards from the New Mexico State Bar and the Champion of Justice Award from New Mexico Legal Aid. He was also named Citizen of the Year by the City of Belen in 1995. The highlight of his career, however, was helping design the Valencia County Courthouse.
