301 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine F rom first developing a general interest in physics during his high school years, Dr. Robert Lincoln Carman Jr. is now a well-known figure in his field for achievements including the discovery of an underlying physics limiting scale of solid state lasers in 1973 and generating the first terawatt sub picosecond pulse laser and performing fundamental studies on self-focusing phenomena in 1970. Today, he holds three patents and is the owner of Carman & Associates. Dr. Carman received a BA in physics from Adelphi University in 1962, a PhD in physics from Harvard University in 1968, and also holds a programming management degree from West Coast University. Now in his retirement, Dr. Carman spends much of his time consulting. He began consulting when a European company reached out to him with the hopes to develop an electric motor for airplanes once it landed to ease jet engines. Realizing he could still contribute to the field to which he has dedicated his life, Dr. Carman has been consulting since 2003. At the inception of his career in 1964, Dr. Carman was a staff member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory. In 1970, he became a group leader at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and was promoted to director of the laser fusion program in 1973. One year later, he headed west to serve as a special project leader and program manager at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for 10 years. From 1984 until his retirement in 2003, Dr. Carman worked at the Rockwell International Corp., now Boeing. Additionally, from 1982 to 1988, Dr. Carman was the co- founder, chief executive officer and president of KDC Tech. A member of the American Physical Society, Dr. Carman was a fellow of the National Science Foundation and Harvard University. He is most proud of his development of transient spectroscopy alongside Professor Nicholas Bloembergen and development of virtual team processes/technologies to achieve technology and programmatic revolutions while at Boeing. Looking ahead, the author of the 1974 book “Heritage of Copernicus” hopes to continue his work in consulting and partaking in his second passion: woodworking. ROBERT LINCOLN CARMAN JR.
