304 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r.Michael JDeWeert receivedhis PhD in theoretical solid-statephysics from the University of Notre Dame in 1986. Growing up, Dr. DeWeert was inspired to join his profession because of Albert Einstein and the Apollo Program. He always had a knack for science andmathematics, and finally decided to pursue physics while applying for graduate school. Since 2000, Dr. DeWeert has worked with the BAE Systems Electro-optical Processing and Exploitation (EPX) group in Honolulu, Hawaii. BAE Systems EPX provides contract research and development and other services to the U.S. Navy and other U.S. government agencies, specializing in photonics, information technologies and systems integration. Dr. DeWeert has served as chief technology officer since 2007. In 2008, he was also named a BAE Systems Global Engineering Fellow, a recognition of technical excellence granted to fewer than one in 600 BAE Systems employees. Dr. DeWeert is proud of his discovery of gap states in ferromagnet- superconductor junctions, and of his recent advances in separable coded- aperture imaging. Coded apertures work by replacing a camera lens with an opaque plate having a pattern of perforations, creating a jumble of overlapping images. The trick is to computationally unscramble the jumble and compute a clear image. Unlike conventional lenses, which focus only a limited range of wavelengths, coded apertures work with any light wavelengths, from gamma rays to far-infrared light. Dr. DeWeert’s wide-ranging work also includes femtosecond laser propagation in seawater, modeling and simulation of ocean optics, and interferometric imaging. He holds patents in medical imaging, ocean imaging and shearography, in addition to several patents pending. He attribute his success to the respect and support of his peers and teammates. Dr. DeWeert is a SeniorMember of SPIE-TheOptical Engineering Society, and a member of the Optical Society of America, IEEE, the American Geophysical Union and the Marine Technology Society. For SPIE, he chaired the Photonics forMaritime Security symposia from2003 to 2009, forwhichhewas recognized with the Eric Lehrfeld Award in 2005.
