305 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine W ith a deep passion for environmental protection, Phyllis M. Faber has excelled in advocacy in her longstanding career. Ms. Faber graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1949 and from California State University, San Francisco, with a Master of Arts in 1968. She also completed postgraduate coursework at Yale University. Ms. Faber spent 19 years at the inception of her career conducting research. In 1971, a new opportunity arrived for Ms. Faber at Madrone Associates in San Rafael, California, where she was a partner. She remained there until 1976 while she served as an instructor at the College of Marin for one decade. Ms. Faber began her publishing career in 1983when she became editor of the Fremontia-California Native Plant Society in Sacramento. Working in that position until 2000, she has also worked as the publisher and director of the California Native Plant Society Press since 1993. Ms. Faber is the co-founder of the Marin Agricultural Land Trust, whose mission is to protect the future of farming in Marin County from mounting pressures for development. Ms. Faber’s desire was to protect the land, preserve an agricultural community and promote local food. She calls spearheading this opportunity to be the highlight of her career. Alongside being an author of multiple works, Ms. Faber is a member of the Society of Wetland Scientists. She was chair of the board of directors of Marin Discoveries from 1985 to 1989 and vice president of publications of the California Native Plant Society from 1990 to 2000. Additionally, Ms. Faber is a past commissioner of the California Coastal Commission in San Francisco. Ms. Faber was named to the Marin County Women’s Hall of Fame in 1995, named Environmentalist of the Year by the Marin Environmental Alliance in 1990, and won the Marin Green Award from the Marin Conservation League in 1990. In 1983, Ms. Faber won the Coastal and Ocean Management Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers, and in 1982, received the Outstanding Environmental Document Award from the Association of Environmental Professionals.
