310 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine T he excitement of discovery and his love of physics guided Dr. Arlin J. Krueger into a flourishing career in the realm of science. He received a Bachelor of Arts in 1955 and completed postgraduate coursework at the University of Minnesota. He obtained a PhD in atmospheric sciences from Colorado State University in 1984. Dr. Krueger’s achievements include pioneering research on stratospheric ozone, innovative remote sensing from satellites, first satellite detection of volcanic eruptions and associated volcanic aviation hazards. He has also contributed to more than 200 peer-reviewed articles in professional publications. Since 2011, Dr. Krueger has been an emeritus senior scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. From 1969 to 2000, he worked at NASA as an atmospheric physicist. Prior to that, from 1959 to 1969, Dr. Krueger was a physicist at the Naval Weapons Center in China Lake, California, and, after retirement from NASA, was a research professor from 2000 to 2010 at the University of Maryland. During his career, Dr. Krueger has been invited to speak at science workshops and conferences, such as at the University of Washington, the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Russia, and the Fermi School of Physics in Italy. Dr. Krueger developed the first meteorological rocket-borne ozone sonde and first satellite instrument to map the global distribution of ozone, leading to discovery of the Antarctic Ozone Hole. This backscattered ultraviolet sunlight mapping instrument also provided a key advancement in the field of volcanology as it could map and measure volcanic eruption clouds. For his accomplishments in space science, NASA awarded Dr. Krueger with the Exceptional Service Medal in 2001 and the Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 1991. He was the recipient of the William T. Pecora Award from the TOMS Scientific Team in 2006 and was awarded the W.H. Elkins Professorship from the University of Maryland in 2000. Dr. Krueger is a member of the American Meteorological Society, the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior, the American Geophysical Union, and Sigma Xi. He currently serves as Vice President of the NASA Goddard Retiree and Alumni Association. ARLIN J.
