320 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Gary B. Wetterberg is a respected environmental advocate. Some of his numerous achievements include establishing and completing management plans for existing national parks and establishing criteria for developing new parks and reserves, particularly in the Amazon. In Brazil, he developed a procedure for identifying biologically important specific evolutionary locations for future reserves, in what otherwise appeared to be a continuousmonoculture of green vegetation. Dr. Wetterberg worked as the International Forestry Support Program Manager within the U.S. Forest Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1993 until his retirement in 2003. He is certified with the Society of American Foresters, a member of Sigma Xi (The National Forestry Honor Society), and a multi-lingual distinguished speaker in his field. Notably, Dr. Wetterberg has spoken at forestry and wildlife related conferences in Turkey, Paraguay, Ecuador, Brazil and Chili. For his contributions to forest preservation, Dr. Wetterberg was granted the Certificateof Appreciation for Support to International ForestryandLeadership as Latin American Branch Chief in 1995, and in 1991, he was the recipient of the U.S. Forest Service Award of Recognition, and a USDA International Honor Award in 1990. Additionally, for his service internationally, Dr. Wetterberg was awarded the Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Performance in Developing and Implementing Forest Service Programs in Russia, Brazil and Latin America in 1990. Dr. Wetterberg received a BS and MS in forestry from Colorado State University. He then obtained aMaster of Forest Resources and a PhD in forestry in 1974, both from the University of Washington in Seattle. He attributes his success to education and personal experiences, especially working overseas. Dr. Wetterberg’s servicewith the United States Peace Corps in Chile and the Air Force ROTC was a great start to his success. Upon his arrival back from the Peace Corps, Dr. Wetterberg had the opportunity to hitchhike around the world, visiting foreign national parks on approximately $20 per day. He trekked from Chile to Panama, across the Pacific, across the Soviet Union and throughout Europe. DR. GARY B.
