327 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine T he most rewarding aspect of Dr. Edward Alton Powers’ profession is the chance to help people find their way to a more productive life. Dr. Powers was ordained as a Congregational Christian Minister in 1951 and has sought a journey of inclusivity within the church system. Dr. Powers received a BA from the College of Wooster in 1948, a Master of Divinity from Yale University in 1952 and a Doctor of Education from Columbia University in 1973. Dr. Powers started his career as a Congregational clergyman in Hamden, Connecticut, and pastor in Pleasant Hill, Ohio. From 1956 to 1960, he was secretary of the department for youth work at the Congregational Churches (now known as the United Church of Christ), and for 20 years, served as general secretary for the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries. For seven years, Dr. Powers was a faculty member at the American Management Association’s Executive and Career Development program, and for 35 years, he was an affiliate faculty at The New School’s Organizational Development Master’s Program in New York City. Dr. Powers was asked in 1975 by the United Church of Christ to oversee a two-year policy study on human sexuality. A General Synod in 1977 acted on the report, acting to provide full acceptance of gay men and women in membership, leadership and ordination. In addition, during this period he took leadership as part of the National Council of Churches oversite of the translators off the Revised Standard Version of the Bible to overcome issues of patriarchy and sexism. In 1987, Dr. Powers was part of the first group of New School faculty to receive the award for Distinguished Faculty Leadership. He credits his mentors Drs. Alfred Randall, Richard Niebuhr, Phillip Phenix, Mark Lipton and Mary Watson.
