Mr. Silverio attributes his success to being fully dedicated to his nonprofit’s mission of saving the lives of precious newborns and understanding the societal issues relating to infant abandonment and its demographics. He also attributes the success to building a team and network of committed volunteers, the use of technology, establishing a 24/7 multilingual helpline, building relationships and creating realistic fundraising campaigns. In addition, Mr. Silverio credits his faith in guiding him on this life-saving journey. Prior to founding the foundation and nonprofit, Mr. Silveriowas the founder of Nick E. Silverio and Associates, Inc., which exceled in the computer software and services industry for 20 years. Mr. Silverio’s favorite quote that he lives by is “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why” by Mark Twain. Mr. Silverio found out why. T urning a personal tragedy into saving lives is a difficult journey, but Nick E. Silverio did so with grace and compassion. Mr. Silverio created the Gloria M. Silverio Foundation, and its nonprofit A Safe Haven for Newborns, in 2001 to honor his late wife Gloria. Although married for 32 years with no children, the couple had a deep love for children as they served as godparents to 14. Mr. Silverio made speaking up for helpless newborns his new purpose in life. Since the company’s fruition, Safe Haven for Newborns has saved more than 300 newborns from abandonment and has helped more than 5,000 pregnant women in their time of need. A Safe Haven for Newborns is focusing on expanding the nonprofit’s mission nationally and internationally. He plans to build a home for pregnant women and women in crisis, create greater ongoing awareness to Safe Haven for Newborns in schools, and establish a greater collaboration in both the public and private sectors.
