337 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A collector of crystals since 1947, Dr. Eugene S. Meieran went on to study the properties of metallic and semiconducting crystals. He graduated from Purdue University with a BS in metallurgy in 1959, and from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a ScD in materials science in 1963. In 2004, Purdue awarded him an honorary doctorate. Dr. Meieran worked at Intel Corporation since 1973 in various positions ranging from manager of package development to managing the AI Lab. He retired as Senior Intel Fellow in 2009. He also held positions as director of research at MIT’s Leaders for Manufacturing program from 1995 to 2000, and participated in Sematech and Semiconductor Research Corporation while at Intel. Before Intel, Dr. Meieran worked at Fairchild Semiconductor R&D in Palo Alto as a member of the technical staff. A treasured memory was as manager of the Materials Analysis Lab; he was involved in a serious issue impacting the Apollo 12 launch scheduled for November 1969. Upon analysis, he assured NASA it was safe to fuel the spacecraft for a successful mission. Dr. Meieran received numerous awards for his work in the semiconductor industry and for work with naturally occurring crystals. He was named Distinguished Engineering Alumnus by Purdue in 1988 and was inducted into the Gem Institute of America Hall of Fame in 2002. He published about 75 papers (three of which received international awards) and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2000. He contributed to the 2000 NAE book “A Century of Innovation,” and is currently publishing a book on California Indian basketry. Dr. Meieran continues to work with crystals as president of the advisory board at the University of Arizona Gem and Mineral Museum, and president of the board of the Rice Northwest Museum in Hillsboro, Oregon. One main contribution was saving the two large topaz crystals in the Smithsonian on exhibit near the Hope Diamond, once scheduled for cutting as x-ray monochromators. He previously served as chairman of the AIME in San Francisco and as an officer of the Electron Microscopy Society of America. DR. EUGENE S.
