Mr. Schurz is an elder of the Bozeman Presbyterian Church in Montana and previously served on the board of trustees of the American Museum of Fly Fishing and board of directors of the Indiana Endowment for Educational Excellence. A foundation honorary trustee of American Women in Radio and Television, he is also a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Associated Press, the American Newspaper Publishers Association, C-SPAN and the American Press Institute, among others. Additionally, Mr. Schurz is a past president of the Chesapeake Associated Press Association, Hoosier State Press Association and the Institute of Newspaper Controllers and Finance Officers. C oming from a family of newspaper editors and publishers, Franklin D. Schurz Jr. worked summers from the age of 15 in various newspaper departments. Growing up in the industry compelled Mr. Schurz to forge his own path, and he did so with Schurz Communications, Inc., beginning in 1982, where he served as chairman, president and treasurer. He was named chairman emeritus in 2007. Mr. Schurz received a Bachelor of Arts in 1952 and anMBA in 1956, both fromHarvardUniversity. Completing an Advanced Management Program at Harvard in 1984, he holds an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Indiana University Bloomington. Additionally, Mr. Schurz served as a second lieutenant to captain in the U.S. Army Reserves Artillery from 1952 to 1962. Mr. Schurz’s career in journalism commenced in 1956, when he served as an executive assistant at the South Bend Tribune. From 1960 to 1970, he worked for the Morning Herald & Daily Mail in Hagerstown, Maryland, as an assistant publisher, publisher and editor before returning to the South Bend Tribune in 1971. Mr. Schurz moved up the ranks at the Indiana newspaper from secretary to director, associate publisher, editor, publisher, executive vice president and president.
