46 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine P aul Theodore Steucke’s career gave him the best of both worlds. Mr. Steucke recalls from the age of 14 that he had a love for painting, and he asked his father for a set of oil paints for Christmas. With much encouragement from his art teacher, Mr. Steucke chose to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University, formerly known as the Richmond Professional Institute, and graduated in 1962. Mr. Steucke also spent six years in the Virginia National Guard. Right out of college, Mr. Steucke was the director of art at the Virginia Extension Service. In 1963, he made a career turn and was a visual information specialist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service in Washington, D.C. Mr. Steucke went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service as a public information officer and then assistant branch chief of audio- visuals. From 1971 to 1974, he was executive secretary of the U.S. Water Resources Council. Mr. Steucke moved to Alaska in 1974 while he worked as a public information officer at the Alaska Land Use Commission, Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He returned to Washington, D.C., in 1989 with the FAA until his retirement in 1994. Post-retirement, Mr. Steucke has focused solely on his art. Mr. Steucke’s painting that he is most proud of is titled “Ivan,” based on a Russian sailor. He says it is one of the most powerful pieces that he has done. Mr. Steucke has spearheaded multiple one-man shows in Alaska, Hawaii, Washington State, Washington, D.C., and Virginia, and he is also the author of three books: “Burbia Boy,” “Burbia Man” and “The Art Work of Paul Steucke.” Mr. Steucke finds it rewarding when people tell him that they love his work. Mr. Steucke was honored to be selected as the president of the Public Relations Society of America in Anchorage, Alaska, in which he dealt with more than 60 representatives of advertising agencies. He was also the president of the Society of Federal Artists and Designers in 1970.
