49 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine V ivian J. Tsao was encouraged by her mother, who studied art, to develop an interest in drawing at an early age. While in middle school, Ms. Tsao began taking art lessons from Prof. Sun To-Ze in Taipei. Prof. Sun and her father, a journalist, introduced her to the beauty of words and images. In 1973, Ms. Tsao received a BA in fine arts from National Taiwan Normal University. She pursued graduate studies at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States and obtained an MFA in painting in 1976. Ms. Tsao’s passion for words and images is the guiding light of her pursuit, which reflects her eclectic background in both Chinese and Western traditions. The highlight of her art career since 1973 includes her invitational solo exhibitions at Tenri Cultural Institute in New York in 2018 and at the National Museum of History in Taiwan in 2009. She also exhibited at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Queens Museum, Ceres Gallery in New York, and Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown. Since 2009, Ms. Tsao has been a contributing art writer for the Bulletin of the National Museum of History. Her paintings and writings on art, in both Chinese and English languages, were published internationally. They included Pratik, an English language literary magazine, published in Nepal in 2019; the bilingual book “Paintings by Vivian Tsao,” published by National Museum of History; “100 New York Painters” by Cynthia Dantzic; and her book in Chinese, “The Mark of Time: Dialogues with Vivian Tsao on Art in New York.” As recipient of the artist-in-residence grant from New York State Council on the Arts in 1985, Ms. Tsao worked in her studio and at the Asian American Arts Centre in New York. She taught art at Pace University from 1990 to 2006. As art instructor at the National Taipei University of Education from 1972 to 1974, Ms. Tsao discovered the importance of sharing her passion for art with students. She holds membership with The National Arts Club and College Art Association, and is a Fellow of Dyson College at Pace University. VIVIAN J.
