85 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine administration in 1968, both from California State University, Los Angeles. Ms. Duke holds lifetime teaching, administrator and reading specialist credentials. Diving into her career in 1951, Ms. Duke’s first teaching role was at Arlington Public Schools in Iowa. She went on to teach at St. Louis Park Public Schools in Minnesota from 1953 to 1955 before moving to California and sustaining her career on the West Coast. From 1963 to 1968, she was a teacher and supervisor at the ABC School District in Cerritos, California, then she was selected in 1968 to serve as an education consultant at the State Department of California in Sacramento and with special assignment as a consultant in the Orange County Department of Education. Since 1975 to the present day, she is president of four Oakwood Academy Schools, which she founded and developed in Long Beach and Bellflower, California. Ms. Duke’s civic duties include being a conference leader and speaker for the State Department of Education. She received the Governor’s Outstanding Leadership Award in 1970. She also was a founder and later president of New City Banks in Orange County. Now widowed, she is the sole trustee of Duke Properties. Additionally, Ms. Duke was the founder and president of Reading Specialists of California. Ms. Duke attributes her success to her ability to see the big picture, her desire to analyze, solve issues and be a leader. Outside of her teaching roles, Ms. Duke is a published author, having written “Pushing for Success in Life,” “Destined to Live Nine Lives” and “Song of Sounds.” In her free time, Ms. Duke enjoys spending time with her family and grandchildren, gardening, skiing, scuba diving, painting, photography, writing and traveling. A lways keen on becoming a teacher, Phyllis Kellogg Duke received an Associate of Arts in elementary teaching from the University of Northern Iowa.
