96 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine well as a technical staff member at AT&T’s Bell Telephone Laboratories in Illinois. Mr. Herrick obtained an MSEE from Purdue University in West Lafayette in 1969, a BSEE from Michigan State University in 1968 and an AAS from Kellogg Community College in 1966. Prior to receiving his education, Mr. Herrick served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962 to 1964 as a navigational aids technician. Mr. Herrick received two major grants from the U.S. Department of Education totaling $600,000 for an undergraduate semester exchange and a dual concurrent master’s program with Ireland and Germany involving 96 students. He is an inductee of Purdue’s Book of Great Teachers, an honor reserved for only 267 faculty in the history of Purdue at the time of his induction. Additionally, Mr. Herrick was the recipient of the American Society for Engineering Education Frederick J. Burger Award in 2010 and the James H. McGraw Award in 2014; and, elected Fellow in 2012. W hen Professor Robert James Herrick came to the conclusion as a child that he could not become a cowboy, he analyzed what he also enjoyed: mathematics and science. He knew he wanted to impact society, and he gravitated toward engineering. Later on, Mr. Herrick realized teaching had a greater direct impact on individuals and dedicated his career to being an exemplary professor. For the last 30 years, Mr. Herrick has been a key member of Purdue University’s School of Engineering Technology inWest Lafayette, Indiana. He was named a Robert A. Hoffer distinguished professor in 1999, and he has also served as professor, associate professor, department head and assistant department head. Mr. Herrick calls teaching and impacting the lives of his students, of which many of whom are now using engineering to affect the lives of others, the highlight of his career. Before dedicating himself to Purdue, Mr. Herrick was the electrical engineering program leader for nine years serving as engineering technology chairman for two years.
