97 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine Prevention Research at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism based in Bethesda, Maryland. He is a past president of the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety (ICADTS) and has held numerous appointments at the Boston University School of Public Health. Between 1973 and 2004, he served as an associate dean for research, chairman of the Department of Social and Behavioral Science, professor, associate professor and assistant professor. Dr. Hingson has been involved in extensive research on raising the legal drinking age, the impact on laws that make it illegal to drive under the age of 21 after any drinking, and laws to lower the legal blood alcohol limit to 0.08 percent, which was adopted in every state. He has also conducted research on the magnitude of underage drinking, trends in drinking and college age drinking in addition to research exploring the relationship between drinking at early ages, the development of alcohol dependence, and injuries after drinking. Dr. Hingson is a member of the American Public Health Association, ICADTS, the Research Society on Alcoholism, the U.S. Government Interagency Coordinating Committee, the Interagency Prevention Working Group of the Office of National Drug Control Policy and the editorial board of “Alcohol: Clinical and Experimental Research.” In light of his dedication to research in his field, Dr. Hingson has been the recipient of awards from numerous reputable organizations, including the National Institutes of Health, ICADTS, American Society of Addiction Medicine, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the U.S. Jaycees. Out of all of his achievements, Dr. Hingson is most proud of his published studies and comprehensive research. He credits his father Robert for being his greatest influence and mentor. D r. Ralph Hingson received a BA in international relations from Johns Hopkins University in 1969 and an MPH in population studies from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970. He went on to obtain a ScD in public health and behavioral science from Johns Hopkins University in 1974.
