217 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine of the first epidemiology study of California Indian health status. In 1994, he was a recipient of the California Area Director’s Award for Managerial Excellence for Leadership in Advancement of Healthcare Administration. Before launching his health care career, Mr. Beckwith served as a personnel and administrative officer in the U.S. Air Force from 1962 to 1974. Between those years, Mr. Beckwith was stationed in San Francisco; Topeka, Kansas; and Glendale, Arizona. Internationally, he served in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and the Republic of South Vietnam. In 1976, Mr. Beckwith began working as an administrator and associate director at the Community General Hospital of Sullivan County in New York. In 1978, he became the administrator for ambulatory care with the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) in Baltimore and held a similar role in 1981 with the Bureau of Medical Services in Hyattsville, Maryland. From 1981 to 1984, Mr. Beckwith worked at the Albuquerque Area Indian Health Service andmoved onto the California Area Health Service in 1984. He worked there as special assistant to the area director and senior internal auditor until his retirement in 1996. An author, presenter in his field and alumni admissions interviewer for Cornell University, Mr. Beckwith has been honored with awards from the U.S. Savings Bond Campaign Coordinator, Combined Federal Campaign Coordinator and USPHS. He received a BS in psychology from Loyola Marymount University and a Master of Professional Studies in hospital and health services administration fromCornell. He alsoholds a certificate fromGeorge Washington University. Mr. Beckwith is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, USPHS, and Commissioned Officers Association of the USPHS. The advice that Mr. Beckwith offers the next generation is to get an excellent education and have persistence. C harles Allan Beckwith became involved in his profession in the health care industry because of his family legacy: his great- grandfather founded the Beckwith Drug Store in Beatrice, Nebraska, in 1887. Of his five sons, there were two pharmacists, two optometrists and a dentist. His father was a physician, and his wife was a nurse.
