204 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine I ntroduced to United States history at a young age, Ambassador Stephen R. Lyne, PhD, was intrigued by the American Revolutionary War and the early colonization of England. He cultivated great respect for the country’s roots and felt he wanted to do more for his country. By the age of 14, Ambassador Lyne knew he wanted to be a diplomat. Ambassador Lyne received a Bachelor of Arts in history from Amherst College in Massachusetts in 1958. He achieved a Master of Arts in history in 1961 and PhD in history in 1965 from Stanford University. From 1980 to 2002, he was a professor of international relations and history at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, and from 1985 to 1986, he served as a diplomat-in-residence at the Center for International Relations. Previously, he worked for the U.S. Embassy as an ambassador to Accra, Ghana, from 1987 to 1989. Ambassador Lyne called this position the highlight of his career. He was very moved to have the band of Ghana playing the U.S. national anthem at his welcoming ceremony. Additionally, Ambassador Lyne served as the U.S. Embassy’s deputy chief of mission for Lebanon, Australia, Algeria and Gabon between 1971 and 1985. He was an office director and section head for Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia for the Bureau of East Asia at the U.S. Department of State. Likewise, he was a political officer for the American Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from 1962 to 1964. Ambassador Lyne was awarded Diplomat of the Year in Ghana in 1987 and was granted the Presidential Meritorious Honor Award in 1986, two Joint Superior Honor Awards in 1982 and 1985, and two Individual Superior Honor Awards in 1971 and 1984. Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, Ambassador Lyne was married to his late first wife, Mary, for 55 years. He credits Mary for being instrumental in his life and professional success. Currently residing in California with his wife Shanshan Lyne, he is the proud father of two children, Deborah and Richard, and grandfather of five grandchildren. STEPHEN R.
