206 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine S ally Johnson Novetzke always held a deep interest in politics and began her studies in 1950 at Carleton College in Minnesota. Due to the Korean War, she was unable to finish her degree, but still set off on a prolific career in community politics in Hawaii and Oklahoma. In 1991, Mount Mercy College awarded her with an honorary PhD. Since 1970, Ms. Novetzke has served as chair of the board for her family company, U.S. Name Plate, Inc. Ms. Novetzke lived in Oklahoma City for six years, where she became involved with the Republican Party and later worked for the late Barry Morris Goldwater, a five-term senator from Arizona and the Republican Party nominee for U.S. president in 1964. Holding various positions that opened the door to many civic opportunities, Ms. Novetzke started a Sunday school in the Oklahoma City Catholic Church. She also started a brownie troop in her town. Notably, Ms. Novetzke worked for former President George H.W. Bush, becoming close friends with him. She was co-chair of his inauguration in 1989, and that same year, he asked her to be the 11th Ambassador of Malta. She served as ambassador from 1989 to 1993. For her excellent service to the European island nation, Ms. Novetzke was honored as a decorated dame by the Order of Knights of Malta. Along with the Maltese honor, Ms. Novetzke was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement from Carleton College in 1994 and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Stillwater High School in 1991. Ms. Novetzke attributes her success to being happy, as she always thoroughly enjoyed contributing to the local community and the country. Ms. Novetzke is a member of the Council of American Ambassadors, advisory council member for the Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, chair of the National Council on Youth Leadership and trustee of the Four Oaks Family and Children Services. She is also vice chair, member of the executive committee and life trustee for the Hoover Presidential Library, and a board director and life trustee of the Cedar Rapids Community Theater.
