149 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine B ertina Iolia Wilson has had a distinguished career in the New Jersey education system as a teacher and administrator for more than 30 years. She began her career as a teacher with the Newark Board of Education in 1960 and moved up to project coordinator in 1977. From 1995 until her retirement in 1997, Ms. Wilson served as vice principal of Newark Public Schools. Ms. Wilson received a Bachelor of Arts from Newark State College (now known as Kean University) in 1960 and a Master of Arts from Kean University in 1981. Outside of her career in education, Ms. Wilson kept in touch with her musical side as a choir director and church organist at Zion Hill Baptist Church from 1974 to 2014. She was the recipient of the church’s Living Legend Award, and was also the recipient of the Community Service Award from the Essex County Civic Association. Ms. Wilson served on the Executive Board of the Newark Chapter of the Project Coordinators Association for several years. The Order the Eastern Star name her an Outstanding Church Musician in 1986. She believes her purpose in education is working with staff, students and parents equally, and urges other educators to look for the potential in every individual. Dr. Wendt was an elementary principal, staff development trainer and learning improvement center supervisor for Waterford School District between 1978 and 2006. In addition to these responsible roles, she was also the director of elementary education and curriculum research at Bloomfield Hills School District and a teacher and teaching principal at the Baxman School. A career in teaching cannot be done with an education of one’s own, and Dr. Wendt attended Bay City Junior College for an AA in 1959, Central Michigan University for a BA in 1962 and MA in 1964, and Wayne State University for an EdD in 1971. In recognition of her success, Dr. Wendt was the recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award from the U.S. Office of Education and the Distinguished Service Award from Bloomfield Hills School District. Likewise, the Michigan Reading Association honored her with an Administrator of the Year Award and a Celebrate Literacy Award.
