248 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Monroe Eugene Trout began working for a doctor when he was 7 years old to help support his family financially, including his 13 siblings. Interested in medicine from then on, he received a BA in 1953 and MD in 1957, both from the University of Pennsylvania. He also achieved an LLB in 1964 and a JD in 1969 from Dickinson Law School at the Pennsylvania State University. Notably, he holds three honorary degrees. Dr. Trout has been chairman emeritus of American Healthcare Systems, Inc., since 1995. Between 1986 and 1995, he served as chairman, president and chief executive officer. Between 1968 and 1986, he worked at Sterling Drugs, Inc., in various positions, including senior vice president, director of medical affairs, vice president, medical director, executive committee member and board of directors member. Dr. Trout has additionally worked at Pfizer Inc., Harrisburg State Hospital, the Naval Medical Center of Portsmouth, the Department of State and the Central Intelligence Agency, the latter of which he served for 25 years. He was called upon to participate in the Arab-Israeli Peace Treaty of 1975 and lent his expertise to two Congressional Commissions. Dr. Trout started his career in the military and practiced medicine in the U.S. Navy, serving as regimental surgeon for the Third Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan. Alongside his dedication to medicine, he has been an editor and contributor to medical journals. He is a patron of the arts; the Appleton Art Center was renamed in honor of himself and his wife, Sandra Lemke Trout, to the Trout Museum of Art. Serving on the boards of more than 50 public and private sector organizations in health care, he is a member of the American Medical Association and past president of the American College of Legal Medicine. Dr. Trout was the recipient of the Lifetime Leadership Award from the University of Cumberlands, the Visionary Award from the Baptist Health Foundation and the Tradition of Caring Award from the Salvation Army. The City of Knoxville honored him with “Monrow E. Trout Day” on March 13, 2007, as well as named him Knoxville Philanthropist of the Year.
