Janiece Simmons Nolan received a BA with high honors in accelerated liberal arts in 1961 and a MA in botany in 1963, both from the University of Texas Austin, followed by a PhD in biology from Tulane University in 1968 and an MPH in hospital administration from the University of California Berkeley in 1975. During her civilian career she served for 26 years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, first as a physiologist then commanding officer of hospital reserve units, retiring as Captain Medical Service Corps. She was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal three times. From 1997 until her retirement in 2008, Dr. Nolan was CEO of the John Muir Physician Network, a California medical foundation owning physician practices and negotiating health plan contracts. From 1977 to 1997 she was in top management at John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek, a 512-bed acute care private hospital. As the COO in 1983, Dr. Nolan was instrumental in winning the exclusive regional trauma center designation for the hospital, which continues to the present. Prior to John Muir, Dr. Nolan was assistant director of hospitals and clinics at the University of California Medical Center San Francisco from 1975 to 1977. She came to California in 1970 for a postdoctoral fellowship at UC Berkeley, conducting cell aging research at the Veterans Administration Hospital Martinez where she became acting associate chief of staff for research in 1973. In New Orleans from 1968 to 1970, she was a virologist at Gulf South Research Institute studying water pollution. From 1963 to 1965 at Texas Nuclear Corporation she was in aerospace medicine research. Dr. Nolan published 23 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Dr. Nolan received the 2009 Distinguished Leadership Award from the UC Berkeley Alumni Association. She was inducted into the 2008 Women’s Hall of Fame for Leadership by the Contra Costa County Commission for Women and named 1989 Woman of the Year by Women Health Care Executives. Dr. Nolan is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, and is also a Woodrow Wilson Fellow.
