After release fromactive duty, Mr. Godwin joined the USMC Reserve in 1969. In 1983, he was pro- moted to Colonel. He continued to serve until his retirement in 1992. For two years preceding his re- tirement, he was the Assistant Director for Reserve Affairs in the Judge Advocate Division of the USMC. He has received the Legion of Merit, Presidential Unit Citation, Selected Marine Corps Reserve with Four Stars, National Defense Service with One Star, Vietnam Service with Two Stars, Armed Forces Re- serveMedal, VietnamGallantry Cross Unit Citation and Republic of VietnamCampaign with Device. Mr. Godwin has been active with the Rotary Club for 30 years. For 20 years prior to the Rotary, he was an active member of the Exchange Club of Newtown, where he served as president, vice president and director. He has been a member of the Bucks County and Pennsylvania Bar Associations for over 50 years. R obert A. Godwin’s interest in law began during his undergraduate studies at Villanova University, where he earned a BS in economics in 1960 and JD in 1963. He was admitted to practice in 1964 before the Pennsylvania Superior and Supreme Courts, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and, in 1980, the U.S. Supreme Court. At the inception of his career in 1964, Mr. Godwin served as a volunteer defender with the Defenders Association of Philadelphia before serving active duty for the USMC. He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in 1961, and subsequently during 1965 and 1966 as a Captain. He served as senior defense counsel for the 3 rd Marine Division in Vietnam and senior trial counsel for the Marine Corp Base at Camp Pendleton, California. After release from active duty in 1968, he was an associate at Eastburn & Gray. He was an assistant public defender in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, from 1970 to 1972 while commencing his own private practice in Newtown, Pennsylvania.
