John Louis Gerin received a BS in biology in 1959 from Georgetown University and went on to achieve an MS in physiology in 1961 and a PhD in physiology in 1964, both from the University of Tennessee. With a specialty in instrumentation, pharmaceutical companies making vaccines sought after those with such expertise, and soon enough, Dr. Gerin was hired to run the program at Abbott Laboratories, where he worked as a research scientist and group leader from 1965 to 1967. An ever-growing scientist, Dr. Gerin became interested in virology and joined the team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he focused on hepatitis B vaccinations. He served one year as a research scientist, and from 1967 to 1979, was the director of molecular anatomy and the infectious disease program in Rockville, Maryland. In 1978, Dr. Gerin commenced his teaching career as a professor and director at Georgetown University. One year later, he took on the roles of director of the division of molecular virology and immunology at the Georgetown University Medical Center and professor within the department of microbiology and immunology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He served in these roles for 26 years and now is honored as emeritus professor. Most notably, Dr. Gerin holds patents for vaccines for hepatitis B virus and treatment of chronichepatitisB. In1998, hewas theco-recipient of the King Faisal Foundation International Prize for Medicine. Alongside these achievements, Dr. Gerin calls the highlight of his career to be the first clinical trial involving vaccinating newborn babies in China, which was so successful that it convinced the nation to undertake massive newborn immunizations. Additionally, Dr. Gerin is a contributor to more than 350 articles to professional journals and is the editor of the 1987 and 1990 “Hepatitis Delta Virus.” Dr. Gerin is a member of the American Association of Immunologists, Infectious Diseases Society of America, American Society for Microbiology, American Society for Virology, American Association for the Advancement of Science and Sigma Xi.
