300 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine T he developer of the first national and international wildlife crime laboratory in the world, Kenneth “Ken” W. Goddard received a BS in biochemistry from the University of California Riverside in 1968 and an MS in criminalistics from the California State University, Los Angeles, in 1971. He never thought he would enter law enforcement; however, after a serendipitous judo match injury in which his instructor (a Riverside County Sheriff’s sergeant and a 6th degree black belt judo instructor) while driving Mr. Goddard to the hospital, convinced him that he would make a great law enforcement officer. Three weeks later, he was sworn in as deputy sheriff, and found his niche in crime scene investigation. Mr. Goddard commenced his career as a criminalist, crime scene investigator and deputy sheriff for the Riverside County and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office from 1968 to 1972. He moved on to the Huntington Beach Police Department as chief criminalist before heading to Washington, D.C., to serve as chief of the forensics branch at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from 1979 to 1987. For more than 30 years, Mr. Goddard has worked for the National Fish and Wildlife Forensics Laboratory as laboratory director. Mr. Goddard received the 2008 Special Achievement Award from the San Diego Zoological Society. In 1994, he was the recipient of the Clark R. Bavin Award for Outstanding Achievement in Combating Crimes against Wildlife from the Animal Welfare Institute and the Guy Bradley Award from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. He received the 1992 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award from UC Riverside and was named to the 10 Most Outstanding Supervisors and Managers by the Fish and Wildlife Service in 1989. Alongside his environmental work, Mr. Goddard is a writer who has authored “The Interpol Wildlife CSI Manual,” “Chimera,” “In Extremis,” “Double Blind,” “Cheater” and “The Alchemist,” among others. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. KENNETH “KEN” W.
