Portland, OR most proud of his participation in the invention of an instruction set that augmented the CPU capabilities into doing encryption called AESNI, invented in 2007. Dr. Kounavis thrives when developing new inventions to advance technology and the workflow at Intel. Within the next five years, he hopes for continued professional growth and to contribute to the efforts worldwide in solving some of the most difficult problems around building thinking machines. Dr. Kounavis also hopes to keep watching his two children grow and become law- abiding citizens. Dr. Kounavis is a member of the IEEE, Association for Computing Machinery and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He served as president of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association from 2007 to 2012. His advice to aspiring members of his industry is to understand the essence of problems. D r. Michael Kounavis has been passionate about the world of software and hardware engineering from a young age as he watched his father excel as a communications engineer. Dr. Kounavis was not necessarily only a builder, but a strong writer of algorithms and a program evaluator, and he saw great opportunity for growth and collaboration in the field. In 2003, he achieved a PhD from Columbia University and has since been known for his achievements in the delivery and invention of AES encryption engines and the Intel AESNI instruction set. Since 2004, Dr. Kounavis has worked as a staff research scientist at Intel Corp., based in Hillsboro, Oregon. In 2008, he was recognized for his excellence as the recipient of the Intel Achievement Award. He previously served as a graduate research assistant at Columbia University from 1996 to 2003. Dr. Kounavis thanks numerous mentors for guidance throughout his career, including Emmanuel Protonotarios, Andrew T. Campbell and Aurel A. Lazar, all professors of Columbia.
